About Wanderers
The club relocated to Kent Park in Illovo in the late 1930s, and Bob Grimsdell laid out the course under the supervision of Felix Oliver. Construction began in 1937, the first ten holes opened in 1939, and the remaining eight were completed by 1942. During the 1950s three of the original holes were given up to make way for the Wanderers cricket stadium, which still borders the property.
What remains is a tight, well-treed parkland course that uses a modest footprint efficiently and plays to a par of 71. Bent-grass greens were introduced in 1982, and Rob O'Friel redesigned the layout in 1999, rebuilding the greens and bunkers. Water features on several holes, including the dogleg 7th.
Visitors can expect a walkable course where accurate placement counts for more than distance, with the long par-5 10th — the layout's longest hole — running alongside the cricket stadium. It remains a members' club near Sandton that also accommodates visitor rounds and corporate days, and its membership has included well-known sportsmen such as Graeme Pollock.
