About Killarney

The club traces its origins to 1903, when it began as the Transvaal Automobile Club before growing into a multi-sport country club. When the new M1 motorway claimed part of the course in the late 1960s, Killarney recruited American architect Robert Trent Jones to reshape it, making this the only Robert Trent Jones layout in South Africa. Jones left early after a disagreement with the club, and his plans were carried out on the ground by South Africans Bob Grimsdell and Brian Wilkes.

The layout is a narrow, park-style test playing to par 70 over 6,145 metres from the men's tees, with the women's course a par 72 of 5,294 metres. Heavily wooded fairways reward straight driving and punish the wayward, since the rough here is effectively forest, while the greens themselves are relatively generous. Water and birdlife come into view on the closing stretch, notably at the 18th.

Set in Lower Houghton just off the M1 and close to central Johannesburg, Killarney is a mature, well-conditioned course where positioning from the tee matters more than raw distance. The club marked its 120th anniversary in 2023.
