About Ruimsig
Unlike the tree-lined corridors of most Johannesburg parkland courses, Ruimsig occupies fairly open, undulating terrain on the West Rand, which has led some to describe it as an inland links. Wind, thick rough and well-placed bunkering do much of the defending. It is a par 72 that ranges from roughly 5,800 to 7,350 yards depending on the tees, and even its four par 3s measure between 185 and 225 yards from the back.
The course was the first Gary Player design in Gauteng, drawn up with Ron Kirby in 1985 and opened in April 1986. Originally known as Roodepoort Country Club, it is one of the younger non-estate courses in the province and today serves as a public country club and social hub for the surrounding suburbs.
The four par 5s — at the 4th, 9th, 14th and 18th — are the layout's signature, closing with a 580-yard finisher flanked by two dams, while water also comes into play at the 4th and 14th and a canal crosses the 9th. The greens, rebuilt in 1997, are large, subtly contoured and reputed to play firm and fast. Ruimsig hosted the SA Amateur Championship in 2003.
