About Serengeti
The estate's headline layout, the Signature Course, is one of only five Jack Nicklaus Signature designs in South Africa. Measuring about 7,096 yards to a par of 72, it runs across rolling, rugged grassland, with bentgrass tee boxes and water hazards that come into play on eight of the holes.
Nicklaus unveiled the course in 2009, and Golf Digest named it South Africa's Best New Course in 2010. The property is run as a golf and wildlife estate, and a second 18-hole course, Whistling Thorn, gives members and visitors a companion layout alongside the signature design.
As a semi-private estate course close to the airport, Serengeti suits visiting golfers combining a round with travel through Johannesburg. Expect a long, fairly exposed championship test where accurate driving and careful positioning around the water carry more weight than on a typical parkland course, and where the open grassland setting is part of the appeal.
