About Eye of Africa
Routed through some of the highest rolling hills in Gauteng, Eye of Africa pairs wide fairways with substantial elevation change and long views over the city. It plays to a par of 72 and stretches to roughly 7,210 m from the black championship tees — very long even for the thin air of the Highveld — though five sets of tees bring it within reach of most abilities.
Designed by Greg Norman's firm, with Norman working alongside Tad Burnett, and opened in 2010, it was the first Norman course built in South Africa. The greens use an A1/A4 bent-grass strain and sit on cynodon fairways; the front nine climbs steadily, while several holes on the back nine play downhill.
Golfers should come prepared for dramatic elevation changes and a stiff examination from the back markers, including a run of long par 5s of roughly 550 to 580 m and water guarding the left of the par-3 3rd. The course was voted Golf Digest's Best New Course in 2011 and currently sits around 37th in South Africa's Top 100.
