About Bryanston
The land — 301 acres in the township of Bryanston — had been set aside for golf as early as 1940, and the club itself was formed in 1948. Charles Hugh Alison was commissioned to lay out the course in 1949, the first nine holes opened in 1951 together with a Tudor-style clubhouse inaugurated by Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, and the layout was later extended to a full eighteen.
Today Bryanston is a long parkland course of about 6,768 metres — close to 7,400 yards from the back markers — playing to par 72. Water is a constant theme, coming into play on eleven holes, and the round opens with back-to-back par fives that set a demanding early tone.
The length and the water make positioning and club selection as important as power off the tee. The club is semi-private and offers visitor golf, and its clubhouse — rebuilt in 2016 after the 1953 fire that gave Bryanston its phoenix emblem — anchors racquets, swimming and bowls facilities. A greens upgrade programme is scheduled for 2026.
