The course occupies former plantation land on the edge of Edenvale, and mature trees still frame many of its fairways. Charles Hugh Alison, a design associate of Harry Colt, gave it heavy bunkering — around 64 traps split across the two nines — and water that comes into play on eleven of the eighteen holes. Part of the surrounding grounds was declared a nature reserve in 1973, so birdlife and open veld sit alongside the golf.

Opened on 7 March 1937, Glendower has grown into one of the country's most frequent championship venues, staging the South African Open eight times between 1989 and 2018. Vijay Singh took the 1997 title here, and the greens were rebuilt to USGA specifications during a 1985 redesign.

Visitors should expect a long, demanding round that stretches past 7,500 yards from the championship tees at par 72, rewarding accurate driving over raw length. The combination of tree-lined corridors and repeated water carries makes course management as important as ball-striking. The club handles green fees and visitor bookings directly and also runs a pro shop and padel courts.
