About Modderfontein
The 18-hole, par-72 course occupies a valley bisected by the Modder River, its fairways threading between mature trees that place a premium on accurate driving. Strategic bunkering and firm greens shape the challenge, and a dam brings water into play. Nine-hole options are available for those wanting a shorter round.
The club was founded in 1935 by the Modderfontein Dynamite Factory, with the original course designed by Arthur Tomsett and opened by South African great Bobby Locke. Its most famous member, tour professional Hugh Baiocchi, reworked the layout around 1990; his redesigned back nine is generally regarded as the stronger of the two halves.
Modderfontein has consistently ranked inside South Africa's top 60 courses and staged the men's Northern Amateur several times between 2002 and 2008, an event whose winners have included members of the Schwartzel golfing family. The result is an established, welcoming parkland test about 15 minutes from Sandton and close to OR Tambo International Airport, with a driving range, pro shop, halfway house and padel courts on site.
