About Reading
Reading plays as a tight parkland course of par 71, closely framed by trees and stretching to about 6,550 metres from the championship tees. It was laid out by Sid Brews, an eight-time South African Open champion, and water comes into play on 14 of the 18 holes. Bent-grass greens and kikuyu fairways are typical of the region, and the greens were relaid to modern standards by Golf Data in 1996, though the original routing was retained.
The club was founded in the early 1940s, established by members of Johannesburg's Jewish community after they were refused entry to other city clubs. Its original clubhouse was expropriated in 1976 to make way for the N12 bypass, and the present clubhouse opened in 1978.
Visitors can expect a classic, mature design that rewards accurate iron play and thoughtful course management over sheer power, with trees and water shaping strategy on many of the par 4s. The club is located in New Redruth, Alberton, south of Johannesburg, and also has practice greens, a pro shop and a bowls section.
