About Randpark Firethorn
Originally routed by Sid Brews in the 1960s and modified over the following decades, Firethorn was comprehensively remodelled in 2015 by Sean Quinn of Golf Data, when seven new holes were built and every green was rebuilt. Bunker faces were reshaped and the routing tightened to challenge low-handicap players. The result is a demanding par 72 that can be stretched to full tournament length yet stays playable for members from forward tees.
The course anchors Randpark Club, established in 1940 in Randpark Ridge on Johannesburg's north-western edge. Firethorn has hosted the South African Open, including the 2019 and 2020 editions, along with the Joburg Open, both co-sanctioned events on the European and DP World Tour circuits. The club has long been a fixture of Gauteng's competitive calendar.
Play is defined by tree-framed fairways, distinctive flash-faced bunkering and a punishing closing run the club nicknames 'Death or Glory,' where water guards the 16th, 17th and 18th. It is the sterner of Randpark's two eighteens, rewarding precise driving and long-iron approach play. Green fees and semi-private access are offered, and many visiting golfers pair a round here with a loop on the club's Bushwillow course.
