About Royal Joburg East
Completed in 1935 to a Bob Grimsdell design, the East is the championship course at Royal Johannesburg, a club founded in 1890 and one of only a handful in South Africa to hold royal title. Mature trees frame generous fairways, but water hazards and fairway bunkering defend a run of long par-4s, and from the championship tees the course extends to roughly 7,000 metres. The Highveld altitude adds carry, yet it is accurate approach play that the layout rewards.
The East has staged seven South African Opens, with winners including Bobby Locke and Gary Player, who took three of his titles here. For eleven years it also hosted the European Tour's Joburg Open, and it has held the SA PGA Championship and an Open Championship qualifier. It was named Africa's best course at the 2018 World Golf Awards and was the first Audubon-certified course in the country.
Visiting golfers get a pure championship test in mature surroundings close to the city, with a full clubhouse and the club's second 18, the West, alongside. Choosing tees suited to your game is worthwhile, as the back markers are long and exacting.
