About Irene
The club was established in 1911, and the professional Laurie Waters brought the first nine holes into play soon after; the layout was extended to eighteen holes in the early 1920s, with Bob Grimsdell among those involved. Ahead of the club's centenary, Phil Jacobs, a former lead designer at Gary Player Design, rebuilt the greens, tees and bunkers in a 2007 revamp.
The par-72 course plays to about 6,479 yards over gently wooded parkland on the old Irene estate. Bentgrass greens and kikuyu fairways are typical of the Highveld, and the Hennops River provides a natural hazard on several holes.
The land was once part of a government forestry station, and the club is steeped in local history: General Smuts, whose home lay nearby, is recorded trying the game here before declaring it too mechanical for his taste. It remains an accessible, walkable parkland round on the edge of Centurion.
