About Eagle Canyon
Designed by Douw van der Merwe and opened in 2005, the par-72 course was routed through an old granite and sand quarry, and the resulting elevation changes give it a risk-and-reward character unusual for the region. Narrow fairways, undulating greens, natural grasses and the odd blind shot lend a links feel amid the surrounding parkland courses, with the clubhouse set on the high point of the site overlooking all 18 holes.
Water is a defining hazard here: it comes into play on 14 of the 18 holes and features significantly on ten of them, so line off the tee and club selection into the greens both matter. From the white tees the course measures around 6,298 metres, extending to roughly 6,859 metres from the back markers, with several forward tee options.
The layout has appeared consistently in South Africa's Top 100 rankings, holding positions from the low-80s up into the mid-60s across recent years. As a semi-private estate course north-west of central Johannesburg, it is best arranged in advance, and visiting golfers should come prepared for a hillier, more strategic round than the flatter city courses nearby.
