About Kyalami
Laid out by Arthur Tomsett and Koos de Beer, Kyalami rewards accuracy over raw distance. By Gauteng standards its fairways are narrow and closely tree-lined, running across gently rolling ground, and the course is best known for a varied, testing set of par 4s. It plays to a par of 72 and measures about 6,631 m from the back tees, with bent-grass greens set on kikuyu fairways.
The club opened in January 1955, making it one of the older courses in the area. It was substantially upgraded in the early 1990s under club members Brian Wilson and George Adelaine, the greens were rebuilt in 2011, and the on-site dams were enlarged and deepened. Nine of the eighteen holes now bring water into play, and the club stores close to 30 million litres for irrigation.
Visitors should expect a fair but exacting round in which finding the fairway matters more than length. Two of the par 3s stand out: the 186 m 3rd, played across water, and the 200 m 17th, with a dam down the left. The 9th is a long par 5 of around 560 m. Kyalami is consistently ranked inside South Africa's Top 100 courses.
